LOS ELEMENTOS

For the fourth edition of the Young European Baroque Orchestra, Margaux Blanchard explores the Zarzuela, the earliest operatic form in Spain.

Against the backdrop of the War of Succession, choirmaster Antonio de Literes—born in Majorca and flourishing in Madrid—composed his most notable stage works, including the opera Los Elementos (“The Elements”).

Originally described by its author as a “harmonic opera in the Italian style,” this piece, scored for five soprano soloists, gracefully depicts a metaphorical day featuring Dawn, Fire, Earth, Water, and Time.

The climatic themes resonate profoundly in this elemental joust, culminating in the rich harmonies of a mysterious composer whose agile musical expression yields a symbolic work infused with Spanish character—a prelude to Italian virtuosity.
